Clothes for the Cold

Ratsebo, a black boy in long grey pants and blue-grey long-sleeved shirt, barefoot, shivering, standing on a pathway with a large rock beside him. There are dark clouds above. The pathway leads back to a washing line strung between two simple homes. Hanging on line: the socks, gloves, fluffy hooded coat and big sun hat that feature in following images. On one doorstep are yellow boots. Everything looks cold and dreary.
Ratsebo sits on the rock and puts on long, thick, brightly coloured socks. Socks are missing from the line.
Ratsebo stands with one foot against rock, putting on bright red boots. Boots are missing from doorstep.
Ratsebo puts on a large fluffy hooded coat, now missing from line. Cat puts head out of door where boots once were.
Ratsebo puts on bright, thick gloves – missing from line. Cat appears on doorstep.
Ratsebo has contented smile, sits on rock (side view of him) there are still dark clouds above. Cat sits on doorstep.
Ratsebo, in same pose as previously, looks up as shining sun breaks through clouds and bakes down on him. Cat also looking up.
Ratsebo takes off gloves – one is on the rock beside him as he takes off the other. Cat comes to watch.
Standing up, Ratsebo takes off his coat. Both gloves are on the rock. Cat is intrigued.
Ratsebo takes off his boots. Cat looks as though it would like to help. The coat is on rock.
Ratsebo takes off his socks. Both boots and one sock are next to the rock. Cat is curled up on the coat.
Ratsebo, wearing big sunhat, trousers and sleeves rolled up, runs down the path towards us, the cat is following him – the rock and houses are in the distance with the empty washing line. Everything looks bright.

Clothes for the Cold was commissioned by publisher Peter Lague, for Via Afrika, Cape Town. The story takes up 12 pages of a Grade 1 Reader. This style is the Simple Line – great for conveying a lot of information in an accessible way. 

The background is a typical scene from the small West Coast fishing village of Arniston, in South Africa.
